What can be better on a cold winter day, after skiing or just after being outside, than a warm drink? A warm drink can bring life back into a body, but there are even better drinks, those that carry with them the taste of winter. In Romania, the special ingredients that remind us of those cold days when we sit by the stove and look outside of the window at the snowflakes gently settling on the ground are: cinnamon, orange and vanilla.
Let us see how they are combined to make some delicious heart-warming drinks. The most popular winter drink in Romania is boiled wine and it can be found in most pubs once the cold season commences. Here is a recipe that improves the traditional drink and adds a twist to it. The wine is heated and sugar is added to it. Then pepper is added, ginger, cloves, cardamom and cinnamon. At the end, you can put a slice of orange in the cup for a touch of freshness. The different flavors will create an explosion of sensations and will warm your fingers and toes up.
Another traditional warm drink that we like to savor in Romania is milk and cocoa. It is the simplest to make and it also reminds us of childhood, as it is a drink that children usually have. You simply heat some milk and add a teaspoon of cocoa while it is on the heat. Make sure that you keep stirring until the cocoa has melted and there are no lumps. To this, you can add some sugar or honey if it is not sweet enough.
A drink similar to the boiled wine is boiled plum brandy. Since Romanian moonshine is pretty strong and not drinkable by everyone, the following recipe makes it far more palatable. You start by putting some sugar in a kettle, which you melt on the stove. Then, you pour the brandy over it and leave it until it starts to boil. When it has changed its color a bit, you can put some pepper or honey, some cloves and cinnamon. It is the perfect drink after a day of skiing.
The fourth delicious warm drink that we recommend is fruit preserve. You just have to choose your favorite fruit and put it in some water to boil. Then you add some honey or sugar and you can spice it with some vanilla, cloves, cinnamon or orange or lemon zest.
These are some of the best Romanian winter drinks. We hope you enjoy them and have fun making them!
