The Cave of the Disease

The Cave of the Disease, a veritable temple of nature that attracts many tourists each year, is unique in Romania. That’s because it is completely pierced by a river and so the 466 meters of the cave are fully accessible. The name of the cave comes, most likely, from the noble Bolia family, from the 15th century, who was the owner of several land and forests in the area just a few kilometers from the city of Petroşani.

The Cave of the Disease and the Dacian gold

Hikers interested in history have one more reason to visit the Cave of the Disease, which is on the road that once linked the East to the West. The legends say that in the mountains where the water has carved the Cave of the Disease, the Dacians hid a fabulous treasure to avoid being discovered by the Romans.

Moreover, the locals talk about a curse protecting the treasure. Therefore, during the time there have been several braves who have found the Dacian gold, but they have never returned to our world to show to other people the place where the treasure was hidden.

The Cave of the Disease, the ideal place for the concerts thanks to the excellent acoustics

Tourists who visit the Cave of the Disease are struck by the beauty of this unique place in the western part of Romania. The entrance to the cave, which has the appearance of an open mouth of a wolf, with a width of 20 meters and a height of 10 meters, is remarkably spectacular.

The Cave of the Disease is recognized for its special acoustics, not only for its beauty, therefore, several times, here are held numerous concerts, especially during the winter holidays.Already in the interwar period, the main hall of the cave, which is also the largest, has been used for concerts and more other events. Therefore, this room is also known as the Concert Hall and Dance Hall.

The Cave of the Disease was opened recently being restored by a group of cavers, when after years had been abandoned. In the past, in this place were shot several scenes of the famous historical film "The Legend of the Nibelungen".
