TIFF has made a name for itself and for the city of Cluj-Napoca by playing the newest and most relevant films of the moment and organizing numerous related events that bring the city to life.
Although in the beginning, it was essentially a local affair, each new edition has garnered more and more foreign interest. It has acquired so much recognition that most budding film directors see it as a stepping stone in their career.
What makes it such a special event is the fact that it is not limited to cinema, but has many other associated events. One of the most popular traditions of the festival is the outdoor film screening in Union Square.
Next, there are concerts scheduled for every evening of the week. They are usually held at Casa Tiff, on University Street, or at Banffy Castle, in Bonţida. This year, a number of renowned musicians will grace the stages of the festival.
The first of the headliners is the French band Zenzile, which will be doing a show on Sunday, the 31st of May at Banffy Castle. It promises to be a unique cine-musical experience as the band will accompany the screening of the 1972 documentary Berlin: Symphony of a Great City.
The organizers have also planned a couple of new additions to the festival by way of celebrating the city’s becoming European Youth Capital this year. One of the events, called TIFF Campus, is especially destined for students. It will be held in the student residence area Hasdeu between the 29th and 31st of May. Some of the films that have been prepared for the young learners are “Dyke Hard”, “Dessau Dancers” and “Wild Tales”.
The second event is called Cine-pool and entails the screening of shorts in a pool. Each film approaches the theme of the football World Cup – and the frenzy surrounding it – from a different perspective. The attendees should show up in swimming attire and will have all sorts of inflatable gadgets to make themselves comfortable.
The organizers have made a habit of bringing international film stars to the festivities. This year is no different, as actress Nastassja Kinski will be the special guest. She will make an appearance at the screening of Paris, Texas on the 3rd of June and will receive the Special Award for the Contribution to the World Cinema on the 5th of June.
