Bicaz Gorge in the Eastern Carpathians

Bicaz Gorge in the Eastern Carpathians

Bicaz River caved for entire millennia in the hard stone of the mountain, thus being able to get by and create a monumental landscape of a bewildering beauty.

After removing the limestone blanket, Bicaz River and its tributaries (Cupasul, Laposul, Bicajelul and Sugaul), when they encountered limestone barriers that couldn’t be penetrated, managed to infiltrate underground, creating an erosion from inside and thus caving in some slopes as seen in the area of Serpentinelor Mari. The karst landscape, made up of mixtures of jaspers, volcanic ashes, conglomerates, marls and sandstones, rocks of different colors and shapes, represents one of the most impressive and spectacular touristic routes in the Carpathians.

The Gorge sculpted in stone is surrounded by vertical walls of 300-400 m and the fascinating serpentines, like coils waived in the cliffs, are looping through the majestic mountains.

The caves and sinkholes hidden in the limestone wall as well as the small gorges created by the Bicaz River tributaries complete the superb landscape created by nature – Black Cave, Cascada Cave, Licas Sinkhole, Sinkhole with Three Entries.

On the same route, we can admire the massifs: Piatra Altarului(1120 m), Piatra Pinteștilor (847 m) Piatra Arșiței (835 m) and the cliffs: Piatra Surducului, Poarta de Piatră, PolițeleBardosului.

Don’t miss out Podul Ungurilor (located before Bicajelul River discharges into Bicaz River),Peretele Bardosului and Gâtulladului–the most spectacular part of the gorges which extends for a length of 800 m, starting from the Bicajel River discharge and then through Piatra Surducului and Peretele Bardosului.

There are other interesting touristic places in addition to this marvelous landscape waiting to be visited and admired: “Izvorul Muntelui” Reservoir, Poiana Teiului, Tarcului Valley, Piatra Teiului, Duruitoarea Waterfall, Tosorog and Munticelu Caves and, of course, the Red Lake.
