Reviving Traditional Craftsmanship: The Blue Ceramics of Saschiz

In the heart of Transylvania, in the picturesque village of Saschiz, lies an ancient secret preserved in the distinctive color of local ceramics - the blue of Saschiz. This unique blue, paired with its famous decorating technique called sgraffito, represents a cultural treasure still not fully discovered.

It is said that there are three types of blue in Romania: Blue of Voroneț, Blue of Săpânța, and Blue of Saschiz. The latter, in particular, remains a mystery in terms of obtaining its unique pigment. However, in recent times, the craft of pottery has resonated with tourists eager for authenticity and traditional beauty.

The ADEPT Foundation, supported generously by the "Camelia Botnar" Foundation from England, in close collaboration with the Saschiz Town Hall, has established a permanent Ceramic Workshop in Saschiz. The ambitious goal of this project is to contribute to the revival of traditional crafts in the Târnava Mare region while maintaining a delicate balance between tradition and innovation.

The Ceramic Workshop provides a space where the traditional technique of pottery harmoniously blends with the benefits brought by modern technology. This synergy not only makes artworks more durable and of superior quality but also creates opportunities for tourists and art enthusiasts. Through interactive workshops, they have the chance not only to admire this traditional art but also to learn and actively participate in the creative process, under the guidance of the talented potter Marinel Gyorfi.
