Timișoara is an increasingly interesting city both from a touristic and from business point of view. The city’s reach is visibly increasing and this is also reflected by the exponential growth of air traffic associated with Timișoara and the surrounding region. Thus, if in the first 10 months of 2016 the local airport was transited by 920,000 passengers, in the same period of the current year the number of passengers increased to 1.3 million, i.e. by 49%.
In addition, the number of flights increased significantly, by 31%, from 11,351 in 2016 to 15,000 in 2017. Last, but not least, a smaller increase was also recorded with regard to the cargo segment, which saw the transport of 13% more commodities compared to 2016. The figures speak for themselves, reflecting a clear expansion of the airport attributed mainly to the new routes inaugurated in 2017 (Frankfurt and Tel-Aviv), but also to supplementing the routes to Bucharest and re-introduction of domestic flights such as the one to Iași.
Obviously, as air traffic increases, Timisoara's exposure as a city grows as well, along with its attractiveness given that it becomes accessible to and from an increasing number of destinations. This is extremely important not only from a touristic point of view but also from an economic perspective because this facilitates the direct connection of the city with the European business environment and even beyond.
