The witches Sofia and Ersebet were been burned alive in Cluj in 1593.

The first sentence for witchcraft was mentioned in 1565 when the midwife Clara Botzi was burned alive.

In Brasov there were at least 20 witch trials between 1621 and 1696. In 1679 Mihai Apafi, the Transylvanian prince, started a process against 25 persons accused of witchcraft, in which Zsuzsanna Vitez, the wife of Pal Beldy, was the main accused.

The stake occurred in the main square of the city, in Sibiu in Piața Mare and in Cluj in front of the St. Michael Cathedral. The remains were then exposed to the mocking public, in front of the Tailors Tower and the road leading to the tower was called the Witches Road.

The water test was used to test whether the accused had evil powers. If, by chance, someone had managed to escape it meant he had magical powers and was burned alive. This occurred in Brașov in the lake of the city’s outskirts, in Cluj in the river Someș, in Sibiu in the Pond of Tailors.
